Suppositories 101
Share
I know what you are thinking. Suppositories? What? Hear me out. Coming from first-hand experience, you will thank me.
What exactly are they and why would I consider this???
Vaginal suppositories are a type of medication that can be used to treat menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes (HRT based) and vaginal dryness (both HRT or non-hormonal based). They are inserted into the vagina and help provide relief of dryness and reduce the occurrences of UTI’s and yeast infections. BONUS: they can help make sex a lot more enjoyable by thickening the vaginal tissue. It’s commonly forgotten that our vagina needs moisture just like your face and body!
Hormone vs non-hormonal, what’s the difference?
Hormone-based suppositories contain either estrogen or progesterone, and are used to replace hormones that the body is no longer producing due to menopause. They can be effective in relieving symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood swings.
Non-hormonal suppositories contain ingredients such as herbal extracts or natural oils. They work by moisturizing the vaginal tissue and promoting overall vaginal health. For women who cannot or do not want to take hormonal treatment, these are a great option.
Are hormone-based suppositories better than oral HRT?
Well… it depends on the individual’s specific needs and medical history. Both hormone-based suppositories and oral HRT have their advantages and disadvantages. It’s best to consult a doctor for personalized advice, but read on to see some of the pros/cons.
What are advantages and disadvantages of hormone-based suppositories and oral HRT?
Advantages of hormone-based suppositories:
- Targeted delivery to the pelvic area
- Lower risk of liver metabolism and side effects
- Reduced first-pass metabolism. Medications inserted into the vagina bypass first-pass metabolism because they are absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the vaginal tissues and bypass the liver.
Advantages of oral HRT:
- Convenient dosing
- Easier to monitor and adjust hormone levels
- May be more effective for treating certain symptoms
Disadvantages of hormone-based suppositories:
- Possible discomfort during insertion
- Potential for leakage
- Possible vaginal irritation
Disadvantages of oral HRT:
- Higher risk of liver metabolism and side effects
- Increased risk of blood clots
- Increased risk of stroke or heart attack in certain populations
Again, it’s really important to discuss these advantages and disadvantages with your doctor to determine the best option for you.
